Another successful Fun Run for Beccles

Sunday September 2nd 2019 saw the Second of Beccles & District Lions Club’s Fun Runs take place around a sunny Sports Field and Common.

Around 80 runners of all abilities and ages took part in what is now an Annual Event, over a course which, starting on the Sports Field, took them down the historic Avenue, through the decades old recently refurbished gates and on to Beccles Common.

Still dressed in its Summer best, the route around this jewel in the Town’s crown welcomed the runners to both its open spaces and shaded tree-lined footpaths.

Those running the 3k course circled the Common once - whilst those braving the 5k run experienced its delights twice before running back down the Avenue and on to the Finish Line on the Sports Field.

Not being a timed event, but designed to encourage runners of all capabilities - there were no winners or indeed losers and all runners returned safely to claim their medals within the next hour.

The runners set off for the 3k and 5k runs.

The next event of the day was the Junior 1k run for those 9 years and under and this had a really excellent turnout with some 30 children of all ages taking the route around the Sports Field.

Some had the encouragement of a Parent running beside them and all finished to much applause from the audience.

They all received a medal and had special number bibs featuring the picture of the Beccles & District Lions mascot - Sid the Lion.

The final event of the day was new to this year’s programme - Team Relay which, whilst attracting only three teams - The Wine Vaults, Santa’s Helpers and Blackwell Print, non-the-less proved to be an exciting spectator event with the Blackwell Print Team ending up winning the ‘Blackwell Cup’ , after a race during which all teams had at some point taken the lead. We look forward to welcoming more teams for next year’s event as the word “gets round”.

We were delighted to see the ‘Harriers’ at our event and our thanks for their experienced help with marshalling the course.

We are very grateful to 013A Photographers - Neville Barnard & Bernadette Barnard plus Brian Collins & Sue Copeman from Beccles Camera Club, who gave their time to take some 200+ photos documenting the event. This archive of the day is fairly much guaranteed to feature most competitors and pictures are available for free download by clicking here (under construction). Please note that the photographers named above retain Copyright in all images and they may only be downloaded for personal use.

Our thanks are also extended to the Mayor of Beccles - Councillor Andrea Downes for spending the morning with us to welcome, encourage and congratulate our competitors and to Bev - our fitness advisor, for the competitors pre-race warm up session.

We are also grateful for the attendance of the mobile version of ‘Sweeties’ shop selling Ice Cream and sweets and for donations of Water and Snacks for the finishing runners, to Roys, Tesco and Morrisons.

In common with all Beccles & District Lions Clubs’ events - all the money raised goes to Charity.
